Big Wheels

Postby 195E » December 20th, 2010, 9:03 pm

Some kite buggies have big smooth/slick wheels, they appear to be half the price of eurocrap depending on size.21/12-8 is £86-00. Problem is they come with stainless bearings 12-20 mm and the sockets they sit in are various sizes around 32-52mm width. The wheel, not tyre, width is 75mm. So, as I am not an engineer, can anyone work out how I can fit these wheels to my fishing boat trolly which I think has standard 1 inch axles. Oh and of course to cat trollys. Here be the bits:- http://www.powerkiteshop.com/accessorie ... igfoot.htm Thank you.

I too am interested in the big wheel conversion problem as I am looking to buy a boat but with big wheels a main criteria. That seems to be a struggle. I am an engineer so happy to meet up, hopefully with the engineering nouse to work it out for both of us. Call me - Sean 0780 6613737

These are the wheels on the Zapcat trolley and they come in standard axle sizes.

Simon, does the Zapcat trolly use the standard 1" nominal aluminium axle or is it a stainless special? thanks...Geoff.

The original Aluminium axle was too weedy so we upgraded to stainless steel which is still on the verge of deforming.

However Zapcat + Engine + Fuel = Approx 180kg

I think our Darts can't be much more than 140kg

Now I have a boat I have ordered some of the following (22x11.00-8 Scorpion Bigfoot Kite Buggy Tyre & Plastic Wheel - £92 ones) but what is also interesting is that you can fit the tyres (£49 ea.) on the std wheels, although it would be with some difficulty.

Worst case is having to change to a stainless bar so that I can put real 25mm bore bearings on but the plan at the moment is to just get some nylon bushes. I will let you know how it progresses.

Yes asymetric, phosphor bronze bearings and stainless shafts. All up cost around £250. So far it seems to work well but time will tell.

The stainless was from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/specialised-pi ... 4340.l2563
I got 2 x 650mm (they will cut to custom length for no extra cost.

Bearings from https://simplybearings.co.uk - 1 x AL2532-30 Oilite Flanged Bush 25x32x30mm (AL.2532-30.FL) = £12.57 Pack 5

The trolley is in the park now (next to the gate so happy to show anyone the details - or feel free to have a look.

I have found that a high speed bounce down through the moats that the kids build on the beach as I rush belatedly to the shore has revealed a weakness on the axles I purchased. Reinforcements are on their way at around £24 delivered.
