Sprint 15 Sport Nationals Championship stays with Shanklin

For the third time in four years, the Sprint 15 Sport Nationals has been won by a member of Shanklin Sailing Club.

With sponsorship from Wightlink, three sailors from the Island took part in the event at Instow hosted by the North Devon Yacht Club. The forecast of three days of strong winds proved accurate and many of the 30 sailors retired from the first race and sat out the rest of day 1 as the wind gusted up to force 8.

Fron the start Paul Grattage from Shanklin was in a class of two with Kevin Dutch from Seasalter in Kent. On the first day Grattage took two wins to Dutch's one, with the other man second in each race. The wind on the second day was force 3 to 5 with a southerly direction forcing a starboard course. Grattage took control of the event by winning both races with Kevin Dutch unfortunately breaking a shroud while leading the second race.

The third day started in a force six with Grattage and Dutch again well out in front. Dutch won the only race of the day from Grattage but that wasn't enough to prevent Grattage from winning the championship with four net points to Dutch's six.

Meanwhile the two other Shanklin sailors Liam Thom and Erling Holmberg got 6th and 12th respectively.
